Description

Cation 220 Na is a high-capacity strong acid cation exchange resin supplied as moist beads in the sodium form. The resin has a cross-linked styrene-divinylbenzene gel matrix with sulphonic acid functional groups.

Its principal application is water softening, where hardness-forming calcium and magnesium ions are exchanged for sodium ions. The published INDION 220 Na data sheet also identifies use as a cation exchanger in the hydrogen cycle for two-stage deionisation.

Key Benefits

  • Strong acid cation exchange resin in sodium form
  • Designed primarily for water-softening applications
  • High total exchange capacity: minimum 1.8 meq/ml
  • Controlled 0.3–1.2 mm bead-size range
  • Effective size: 0.45–0.55 mm
  • Wide operating pH range: 0–14
  • Suitable for domestic, commercial and industrial softening systems subject to system design
  • Regenerable resin for repeated service cycles

Applications

  • Domestic water softeners
  • Commercial water-softening systems
  • Industrial water softening
  • Boiler and utility-water pretreatment where softening is specified
  • RO pretreatment to reduce hardness/scale potential
  • Replacement resin for compatible sodium-cycle softeners
  • Two-stage deionisation as a cation exchanger in the hydrogen cycle, where system design requires it

How It Works

During sodium-cycle softening, the resin exchanges sodium ions for hardness-forming cations such as calcium and magnesium. As the resin becomes exhausted, it is regenerated using a sodium-chloride brine solution so that the resin can return to the sodium form for another service cycle.

Suggested developer visual: a simple 3-step graphic — HARD WATER (Ca²⁺ / Mg²⁺) → CATION RESIN BED → SOFTENED WATER — followed by a regeneration arrow using BRINE (NaCl).

Regeneration

  • Regenerant for normal sodium-cycle softening: sodium chloride (NaCl) brine
  • Actual salt dosage and brine concentration depend on the softener design, desired operating capacity and regeneration method
  • Backwash, brining, slow rinse and fast rinse settings should follow the softener manufacturer / system design
  • Do not publish a universal regeneration dosage unless Starke approves a design basis for the specific system

Packaging & Storage

  • Typical published packing options include 25 L and 50 L HDPE-lined bags; Starke should enable only its actual stocked pack sizes
  • Keep resin moist at all times
  • If resin is not moist, add clean demineralised water and maintain it in a completely moist condition
  • Store bags/drums in the shade
  • Protect from excessive heat, drying and contamination
  • Keep oxidizing chemicals, particularly chlorine, away from the resin
